Drones Expand Long-Range Biometric Surveillance

Drone-mounted surveillance systems are being developed to identify people at long distances by combining facial recognition with gait analysis, body-shape matching, thermal imaging, and onboard processing.

The technology is being discussed for law-enforcement, border, crowd-monitoring, and private-security uses, while civil-liberties groups warn that aerial biometric collection could enable identification without subjects’ knowledge or consent. Its operational maturity, accuracy outside controlled conditions, and legal status remain uncertain.
