Texas Makes Data Centers Pay

Texas is moving from broadly encouraging data center growth toward tighter state oversight.
Governor Greg Abbott, the Public Utility Commission of Texas, ERCOT, and lawmakers are considering or implementing rules that require large facilities to cover more of their grid costs, provide operational and resource-use data, reduce power during reliability events, and face greater scrutiny over water use and tax exemptions. The shift could slow or reshape new connections while determining how much of the sector’s infrastructure and public-service cost is borne by operators rather than residents.
