Prescribed Burns Cut Wildfire Damage

Research and forest-management efforts are strengthening the case for prescribed burns and related fuel treatments as ways to reduce wildfire severity, protect giant sequoias, and limit smoke, property, and carbon-related losses.

Studies found lower fire impacts in treated areas, while California’s Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition is expanding thinning, controlled burning, and post-fire restoration across vulnerable groves. The approach remains constrained by drought, wind, shrinking safe-weather windows, ecological concerns, and uncertainty over how fully its economic benefits account for emissions from intentional fires.
