A United Nations Environment Programme assessment says global warming will likely exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels within the next few years, with current national plans implying at least 1.8°C of warming. UNEP recommends keeping any overshoot as low and brief as possible through immediate emissions reductions, faster renewable deployment, methane cuts, adaptation, nature protection and eventually carbon dioxide removal. The assessment also highlights rising risks to health, food and water security, infrastructure and ecosystems, while vulnerable countries are pressing for increased climate finance and action on loss and damage.
