Researchers Model Fair-Share Climate Pathways image

An IIASA-led study models how climate mitigation pathways change when regional emissions budgets account for responsibility and economic capability. For a pathway that temporarily exceeds 2°C before returning to the limit, constraining transfers shifts more emissions cuts to higher-responsibility regions while preserving the modeled global climate outcome. The analysis also finds less flexibility to reallocate physical emissions reductions in a 1.5°C pathway, increasing the role of finance.
