Illinois Shields Abortion Records

Illinois has enacted the Reproductive Health Records Privacy Act to shield abortion-related information, and certain gender dysphoria diagnoses, from out-of-state access in digital medical records.

The law is designed to reduce the risk that private health data could be used for retaliation, investigation, or prosecution in states that restrict abortion. It also reinforces Illinois’ broader role as a destination state for abortion care and a legal buffer against cross-border enforcement efforts.
