Germany Expands Police AI Surveillance Powers

Germany’s Bundestag approved a new Federal Police Law that broadens the use of AI-supported facial recognition, behavior analysis, drones, telecommunications surveillance, and other monitoring tools in locations including airports, railway stations, and border areas.

The law also expands certain immigration detention and search powers, prompting concerns from Amnesty International, privacy advocates, and legal experts about mass surveillance, racial profiling, transparency, and proportionality. The measures may face review by Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court.
