Russia’s Geran strike drones, derived from Iran’s Shahed design, depend on an industrial network that includes Alabuga-Volokno in Tatarstan, Rosatom’s Umatex division, and supplies of polyacrylonitrile precursor used to make carbon fiber.
Reported shipments from China’s Jilin Chemical Fiber Group have drawn scrutiny because the material may support hundreds or thousands of airframes and was allegedly declared under civilian textile classifications. Rosatom’s plans to expand carbon-fiber and PAN production also illustrate Russia’s effort to build domestic inputs for sustained drone manufacturing, alongside sanctions and export-control concerns.
