U-M Ypsilanti Computing Center Faces Opposition

The University of Michigan has selected a 144-acre Textile Road site in Ypsilanti Township for a proposed $1.

25 billion high-performance computing facility developed with Los Alamos National Laboratory. Township officials, residents and some state lawmakers oppose the greenfield location, citing environmental, water, energy, transparency and land-use concerns, while a local utility moratorium has created a potential legal and scheduling obstacle. The project is intended to support nuclear stewardship, cybersecurity and energy research, with construction projected for 2028 to 2031.
