TVA Charges Data Centers for Grid Costs

The Tennessee Valley Authority approved a dedicated electricity rate for data centers across its service territory, raising average all-in billing impacts by about 10% over three fiscal years beginning October 1, 2026.
New or expanding loads above five megawatts will also face upfront capacity commitments intended to fund generation, transmission, and interconnection needs without shifting those costs to residential customers and other businesses. The decision comes as TVA anticipates substantial growth in regional electricity demand and faces scrutiny over gas-fired generation, emissions, water use, and local permitting.
