Massachusetts Cities Restrict New Data Centers

Holyoke and Mansfield have adopted some of Massachusetts’ strongest local restrictions on new data centers.

Holyoke approved a citywide ban while preserving limited operation of an existing facility, and Mansfield limited new facilities to those using no more than 2 megawatts. The measures reflect municipal concerns about electricity demand, water use, noise, environmental effects, and potential costs to local ratepayers, while also blocking or narrowing proposed investments.
