EU Labels Rate Efficiency, Not Consumption

The European Commission is introducing an A-to-G environmental rating for large data centers, while preparing sustainability thresholds for new or retrofitted facilities.

The labels assess factors such as efficiency, water use, clean-power uptake, and heat reuse, but do not show absolute facility-level consumption. A complaint challenging confidentiality rules highlights the tension between comparing environmental performance and making individual sites’ resource use public; incomplete operator reporting may also limit the available picture.
