Data Centers Face Converging Build Delays

Data center operators are expanding capacity to meet strong demand from high-density and AI-related workloads while facing limited power availability, grid reliability concerns, equipment lead times, cooling needs, labor shortages, rising costs, and growing community opposition.

Surveys point to shorter demand visibility, more expected project delays, and higher distress over the next 12 to 18 months, while modeling indicates that electricity, transformers, processors, land, water, capital, and workforce capacity may tighten together through 2030. The result is greater pressure on operators, utilities, suppliers, and governments to coordinate projects earlier and manage their effects on timelines, costs, and usable capacity.
