Australia’s AI Buildout Faces Resource Rules

Australia is developing national AI standards that would require data-center operators to limit pressure on the power grid and use water efficiently, with legislation planned for early 2027 and implementation requiring state cooperation.

The proposals follow rapid data-center planning, including a large hyperscale project in western Sydney that has prompted concern about electricity demand, water use, land impacts, and potential consumer costs.
