Xcel Minnesota Approves Battery Storage Buildout

Minnesota regulators have approved several Xcel Energy programs aimed at grid flexibility, electrification, and cost allocation.

The most prominent is a utility-owned virtual power plant expected to deploy up to 200 MW of battery storage by 2028, alongside approval of transportation electrification investments and new rules for very large electricity customers. Together, these decisions show the state pushing utility planning toward cleaner supply, managed demand, and more structured treatment of large loads.
