Local Solar Siting and Land Reuse

Coverage from Energies Media, LEX 18 News, and others

Solar development often turns on local questions of land use, not only energy production.

Communities and officials weigh farmland, rural character, wildlife, views, safety, traffic, water protection, property values, emissions goals, setbacks, and decommissioning requirements when reviewing proposed facilities. Other projects reuse capped municipal landfills that are difficult to develop for housing, agriculture, or conventional commerce; these sites can require ballast-mounted panels and careful management of settlement, landfill caps, and gas systems. Examples range from contested projects near Kenton and in Lexington and Darlington County to landfill arrays in Milwaukee, Derry, and Hooksett.
