Renewables Strain Grids Under Rising Demand

Power systems are adding renewable generation while facing faster demand growth from AI data centers, electrification, and heat-related cooling needs.

The transition is creating both benefits and reliability pressures: solar is meeting a substantial share of new demand, but variable output, extreme weather, aging generators, transmission constraints, and limited storage can tighten reserves or produce periods of surplus. Grid operators and planners are increasingly turning to storage, flexible demand, climate-informed siting, transmission upgrades, and firm low-carbon generation to manage these conditions.
