Michigan Probes Underground Hydrogen Potential

Michigan has committed $7.

5 million to investigate whether naturally occurring hydrogen exists in usable quantities beneath the state, particularly around the Michigan Basin and Midcontinent Rift. University researchers will study geological data and existing oil and gas wells, with possible mapping and test wells supported by the funding. The work could clarify whether geologic hydrogen can contribute to decarbonizing trucking, steel, cement, and energy production, but deposits, extraction methods, commercial viability, and regulatory requirements remain unproven.
