Industrial High-Temperature Heat Pumps

Coverage from Cooling Best Practices, pv magazine, and others

Industrial High-Temperature Heat Pumps topic image

Industrial high-temperature heat pumps supply process heat for manufacturing and other energy-intensive operations, including food processing, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and chemicals.

By recovering heat that would otherwise be wasted, they can reduce the electricity or fuel needed to reach industrial temperatures; performance depends on the system and its operating conditions. Johnson Controls’ Sabroe HitemHP is one example, designed to deliver hot water up to 122°C and using butane or isobutane refrigerants. In one reported application combining the system with refrigeration waste heat, the company cited lower energy costs and on-site emissions, illustrating the technology’s potential as well as the site-specific nature of such results.
