French Vineyards Move North

Climate change is reshaping French viticulture in two directions: vineyards are expanding into Normandy, Brittany, and Hauts-de-France, while established wine regions face more severe heat, drought, wildfire, and soil stress.

Northern locations may offer new production opportunities, but frost, excessive rain, drought, long maturation periods, and uncertain premium-wine quality remain constraints. Growers are also testing heat-tolerant grape varieties as earlier harvests, altered sugar and acidity levels, reduced yields, and commercial pressures challenge the industry.
