Renewable Power Systems topic image

Renewable power systems research examines how electricity grids can model, forecast, operate, and stabilize increasing amounts of wind and solar generation.

It connects weather and climate information with operational decisions involving transmission, distribution, batteries, microgrids, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and other flexible resources. Methods range from machine-learning forecasts of wind and solar output to optimization of grid operations and assessment of renewable-rich system performance. The subject is important because variable generation must be coordinated with demand, storage, network constraints, and extreme weather across both local and system-wide scales.
