Floating Solar
Coverage from Energies Media, AutoNotion, and others
Floating solar, or floatovoltaics, uses buoyant anchored structures to generate electricity on reservoirs, irrigation ponds, wastewater facilities, and other water bodies.
Water can cool panels and reduce evaporation, while existing hydropower and grid infrastructure may support deployment. The technology also raises site-specific questions about thermal circulation, fish habitat, waterbirds, materials, anchoring, severe-weather durability, and permitting. Projects in Oregon and studies of U.S. reservoirs illustrate both potential water and energy benefits and the need to coordinate design with local water management, ecological conditions, and transmission systems.
