El Niño Could Worsen Heat, Drought and Flooding Across Asia

A developing El Niño is expected to raise the risk of extreme heat, drought, flooding and disrupted rainfall across Asia and the Pacific through late 2026 and potentially into early 2027.

India, Southeast Asia and parts of China face pressure on agriculture, water supplies, hydropower, power grids and public health, while Pacific island governments may face a compound shock after existing fuel and transport cost pressures. The event will also test whether regional preparedness mechanisms can release finance and coordinate support before impacts escalate.
