China Solar Expansion Pressures Bird Diversity

Research covering 2,344 Chinese counties from 2014 to 2023 links stronger photovoltaic expansion policies with modest but systematic declines in bird diversity.

The reported effects are greatest in wealthier, non-arid areas where cropland and grassland are converted or fragmented, while added vegetation beneath solar installations may not provide equivalent habitat quality. The findings support more careful siting, ecological assessment, native vegetation restoration, and greater use of lower-conflict options such as rooftop solar.
