California Batteries Displace Natural Gas

California’s rapid growth in utility-scale solar and battery storage is reshaping the state’s power system.

Solar generation has increasingly surpassed natural gas, while batteries are supplying more evening peak demand and reducing average daytime gas generation, although gas remains important after battery discharge declines. Rising demand from data centers, electrification and other sources, along with increased imports, will influence how far this shift can continue.
