A global study finds that aerosols associated with coal-fired power generation reduced solar photovoltaic output by about 5.
8%, or 111 terawatt-hours, in 2023. The losses were greatest in China, where coal and solar capacity are concentrated in the same regions, while pollution controls have recently reduced the effect. The findings show that continued coal pollution can directly limit the electricity delivered by expanding solar systems and cause renewable output to be overstated if air-quality impacts are excluded.
