Databricks Builds Agent Control Plane topic image

Databricks is extending Unity Catalog into a runtime control plane for enterprise AI agents through Unity AI Gateway.

The platform is designed to govern models, agents, MCP servers, tools, data access, agent actions, and state across Databricks and external providers using identity controls, contextual policies, guardrails, tracing, lineage, and cost controls. The broader strategy links agent governance to Databricks infrastructure such as Lakebase, MLflow, Model Serving, and business-context tools, while a proposed $188 billion funding round would support continued investment in these products.

The current version largely confirms the existing story, while clarifying that the $188 billion financing remains an unclosed term sheet rather than completed funding.

The story has broadened from a runtime governance layer for AI agents into a more complete enterprise AI operating stack, with new emphasis on data-native components and execution-time policy enforcement. It also gains a commercial dimension through the reported $188 billion valuation and strategic funding tie-in, while several capabilities are still not fully launched.
