Students Draft K-12 AI Rules

Ninety-eight high school students representing all 50 states drafted and approved the nonbinding Students First Act for AI use in K-12 schools at a July 2026 event in Boston.

The proposed model rules emphasize early AI literacy, limits on AI during graded assessments, disclosure and demonstrated mastery for permitted use, student privacy, human review of suspected misuse, and human intervention in chatbot crisis situations. AASA and other organizers plan to share the framework with school leaders, but its provisions require local adaptation and are not legally binding.
