Sovereign AI Infrastructure

Coverage from Australian Institute of International Affairs, IPI Global Observatory, and others

Sovereign AI Infrastructure topic image

AI capacity depends on a tightly connected infrastructure of advanced chips, cloud services, data centers, and frontier models, much of it controlled by a limited number of companies and concentrated in a few countries.

Governments that cannot build every layer domestically are exploring other ways to protect their options: mapping dependencies, strengthening technical procurement expertise, retaining selective control, and developing regional compute or provider alternatives. These choices shape national AI strategies and the governance of the broader AI ecosystem, while international forums can support shared evidence and coordination.
