Municipal AI Policies Tighten

Local governments are adopting formal rules for how employees, contractors, volunteers, and council members can use AI tools in municipal work.

The policies emphasize human oversight, block sensitive data from being entered into AI systems, and limit higher-risk uses such as hiring decisions, legal advice, and autonomous actions. Several towns are also debating transparency measures, including whether AI-assisted documents should disclose that they were drafted with AI help.
