TikTok Settles Children’s Privacy Case

TikTok and ByteDance agreed to pay $400 million to resolve a U.
S. Department of Justice case alleging that TikTok collected personal information from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent, as required by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The settlement includes $300 million payable immediately and another $100 million contingent on the resolution of an earlier order involving Musical.ly. The case highlights continued U.S. enforcement of children’s data protections and pressure on large platforms to strengthen age checks, moderation, and privacy controls.
The current version mainly reinforces the existing settlement narrative, while adding a limited, secondary claim about potentially constrained insurance coverage for regulatory fines.
The allegations now explicitly include retaining children’s data, failing to delete accounts and information after parental requests, and allowing under-13 users to maintain regular accounts. The settlement itself and its broader regulatory significance remain unchanged.
