Seoul AI Cameras Detect Bridge Suicide Attempts

Seoul has used AI-enabled cameras on Han River bridges since 2021 to identify behavior associated with possible suicide attempts and alert emergency responders.

Officials report that the system covers 17 bridges with nearly 900 cameras, detected more than 1,200 incidents in the previous year, and coincides with a reported increase in river rescue rates. The technology can shorten response times, but reported cases of repeat attempts and deaths show that automated alerts cannot replace human intervention or address the broader causes of suicide.
