Meta Faces Lawsuits Over Scam Ads
Coverage from AOL, CBS News, and others

Consumer advocates and Santa Clara County have sued Meta, alleging that Facebook and Instagram allowed scam advertisements to reach users while the company benefited from the resulting advertising revenue.
The complaints also challenge Meta’s public portrayal of its fraud-prevention efforts and allege violations of consumer-protection or false-advertising laws. Meta denies the claims and says it removed more than 159 million scam ads and 10.9 million accounts linked to criminal scam centers in the prior year.
The story is now more specific about the California case and the remedies sought, adding allegations that Meta used AI and targeting tools to deliver scam ads to vulnerable users. It also sharpens the legal framing by emphasizing claims for damages, restitution, and limits on future practices.
