Maine Restricts Employer Surveillance
Coverage from Verrill Law and others

Maine’s Public Law 2025, chapter 524, effective July 14, 2026, regulates how private and public employers monitor employees through computers, phones, cameras, GPS-related systems, and other electronic tools.
Employers generally must provide advance notice, annual written notice, and disclosure during hiring, while the law restricts certain audiovisual monitoring in personal spaces and allows employees to refuse monitoring applications on personal devices. The change requires employers to review surveillance practices, notices, and workplace policies before the effective date.
The story has shifted from a general description of Maine’s new workplace surveillance law to a more concrete compliance framing. The current version adds the law’s citation and confirms broader coverage of private and public employers, while specifying the tools and workplace settings affected.
