Google’s Spirit Data Deal Tests Worker Privacy
Coverage from The Traveler, ConsumerAffairs, and others

Google has sought to acquire a large Spirit Airlines business archive through the carrier’s bankruptcy process, reportedly including employee emails, collaboration messages, HR materials, software, and operational records.
Although direct customer identifiers are reportedly excluded and a third party would de-identify the data, labor groups and privacy specialists argue that linked workplace records may still reveal employees or sensitive context. The transaction’s approval has been delayed while a bankruptcy court considers objections and a competing bid.
The sale has become more contested and less imminent: court approval was postponed into September 2026 as flight attendants’ representatives sought stronger protections and a higher competing bid emerged.
