AI Surveillance Expands Without Oversight

Police departments, cities, and private companies are expanding AI-enabled cameras, license-plate readers, video search, facial recognition, and behavioral analytics across public spaces and connected-camera networks.

These systems are being used to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, and manage large volumes of evidence, but reporting also highlights opaque decision-making, data retention and sharing, accessibility and bias concerns, and limited public control. The central development is a widening gap between deployment capabilities and the transparency, consent, appeal, and regulatory safeguards governing their use.
