Dylan and Lanois
Coverage from Rolling Stone Canada, Rolling Stone, and others

Daniel Lanois produced Bob Dylan’s Oh Mercy and Time Out of Mind, bringing different but related approaches to each album.
The New Orleans sessions for Oh Mercy paired sparse arrangements and prominent vocals with atmospheric guitar textures; “Most of the Time” and the omitted “Series of Dreams” illustrate how production choices shaped the record. For Time Out of Mind, Lanois and musicians including Brian Blade, Jim Keltner and Tony Mangurian used rhythmic loops to move beyond conventional blues arrangements. Lanois has also argued that later remixes diminished the original album’s distinctive atmosphere.
