Taiwan is building a domestic military-drone capability through a six-year program covering aerial, maritime, underwater, and ground systems.
Legislation authorizes up to NT$240 billion, with funding and oversight contested between the executive government and the opposition-controlled legislature. The program assigns military procurement to the Ministry of National Defense while giving the Ministry of Economic Affairs a role in industrial standards, testing grounds, and supply-chain development. Reconnaissance, strike, logistics, communications, and coastal-defense systems are intended to support Taiwan’s asymmetric or “hedgehog” defense approach, while annual funding limits and domestic-content rules remain important implementation questions.
