Ohio Police Drone Rules

Coverage from cleveland.com, GovTech, and others

Ohio Police Drone Rules topic image

Ohio House Bill 251 establishes statewide rules for police drone operations, including warrants for drone searches of interiors where an in-person search would require one, specified exceptions, limits on armed drones and requirements for surveillance records.

It also restricts public procurement of certain foreign-adversary drone systems. Cleveland’s municipal policy adds tighter safeguards, including limits on demonstration surveillance and facial-recognition or gait-analysis tools, public flight mapping and deletion of unrelated captured data. Together, these rules address how police may use aerial surveillance while providing mechanisms for privacy protection, public accountability and operational oversight.

The update clarifies the law’s warrantless-operation exceptions and adds public-records and data-retention details. It also brings privacy advocates’ objections to those provisions into the story.
