New York East River Cargo Drone Trial
Coverage from Aerospace Global News, WIRED, and others

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Skyports Drone Services are testing regular cargo-drone flights between lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Marine Terminal.
The fixed East River route is designed to assess whether drones can move time-sensitive, nonhazardous cargo faster than road transport while operating safely in crowded urban airspace. The trial’s results will shape decisions about medical deliveries, permanent service, and possible expansion to other regional routes.
The story has become more operationally specific: it now centers on a fixed East River route, regular weekday flights, and a named drone platform, rather than a general city trial. It also adds a clearer commercial path, with Speedbird drones, quicker middle-mile delivery, and later medical-supply use tied to the results.
The story has become more concrete and operational: the trial is now described as a yearlong program with specific infrastructure, oversight, and community-review components. It also broadens from a simple FAA-approved route test to a fuller evaluation of economic value, public acceptance, and future regional expansion.
